Nurturing an organizational culture in which work has meaning and connects to a purpose (beyond making money) has become a competitive advantage in the war for talent. Every stakeholder in the organization (customers, employees, shareholders) benefits from an inspiring, purpose-driven and engaging culture.
“Management is great if you want compliance, but if you want engagement, self-direction is better”, says Dan Pink.
To build the workplace of tomorrow, it’s become critical to empathize with and understand employees’ needs, motivations and aspirations; provide employees with the freedom and empowerment to define what their own experience should be.
As Robert Quinn and Anjan Thakor highlighted in recent HBR article, “purpose is not just a lofty ideal; it has practical implications for your company’s financial health and competitiveness. People who find meaning in their work don’t hoard their energy and dedication. They give them freely, defying conventional economic assumptions about self-interest. They grow rather than stagnate. They do more—and they do it better.”

He later became director of talent strategy & acquisition for P.F. Chang’s China Bistro and Pei Wei Asian Diner restaurants before joining forces with he co-founder, Max Hansen, to create the first purpose-based leadership search firm, Y Scouts.
